To have the greatest impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of breast cancer screening, the integration of AI solutions should be considered across the entire screening pathway - not just during image interpretation.
One of the key areas where AI can deliver efficiency benefits is at the start of the pathway: When the woman is invited to schedule her screening mammogram. Over the past 18-months, Covid-19 has exacerbated existing backlogs due to radiologist shortages and demanding workloads. As a result, now more than ever, time is of the essence to ensure that millions of unscreened women around the world are not overlooked, especially those at greatest risk. Renowned statistician, Professor Stephen Duffy, will share how the UK Breast Screening Programme is tackling this challenge with the support of Kheiron’s AI-enabled invitation tool, RSViP.
Another key area where AI can help is during image acquisition and to support audit of breast screening services. Professor Ruud Pijnappel of the LRCB and Dr. Randy Hicks of US-based Regional Medical Imaging will discuss why radiologists must insist on well positioned, properly exposed mammograms to optimise cancer detection and avoid unnecessary technical recalls. This includes working in partnership with their radiographers to drive continuous improvement efforts focused on generating high quality diagnostic mammograms for each woman. These leaders will share their lessons learned and discuss what value they believe AI solutions such as Kheiron’s Mia IQ can bring to the acquisition of mammography images.
